Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I choose the Andes, Chile over other Southern Hemisphere ski destinations?

La Parva in the Andes offers one of the most efficient and high-quality ski experiences in the Southern Hemisphere, with high-altitude terrain, reliable conditions, and frequent light, dry “champagne” snow. Sitting above 10,000 feet, it delivers expansive, big-mountain skiing, and just outside Santiago, it is highly accessible—60–90 minutes by car or 15–20 minutes by helicopter—making it possible to ski the same day you arrive. Compared to Argentina, it avoids longer travel times and more complex logistics, while compared to New Zealand, it offers higher elevation, more consistent snow quality, and larger, more open terrain. With fewer crowds and a more authentic, less commercial mountain environment, La Parva remains a top choice for skiers seeking both performance and convenience.

How does heli-skiing in Chile compare to Canada, Alaska, or the United States?

All offer world-class heli-skiing, but Chile stands out for its high-altitude terrain, light “champagne” snow, and vast, open alpine runs. Compared to Canada’s tree skiing and Alaska’s more extreme terrain, Chile offers a more balanced and accessible big-mountain experience, with short storm cycles and frequent sunny weather windows, along with efficient access from Santiago.

What makes this experience different from resort skiing?

Heli-skiing takes you far beyond the limits of any resort, into vast, untouched terrain where every run feels truly your own. Instead of crowded runs and tracked snow, you ski wide-open lines in pristine conditions, with access to terrain that would otherwise take days to reach. Each descent is carefully chosen for the moment, creating a seamless and highly personalized experience—a rare opportunity to access the mountains in a way few ever do.

Will the altitude affect my skiing performance?

Altitude can have a mild impact on the first day, but most skiers adjust quickly. Guides manage the pace and terrain to keep you comfortable as you acclimate, and by day two or three, most guests feel fully adapted. The benefit is higher-quality, lighter “champagne” snow and more consistent conditions.

What happens if I get altitude sickness?

Mild symptoms can occur on the first day, but most guests adjust quickly. Guides monitor how you are feeling and adapt the pace and terrain as needed. Hydration, rest, and gradual acclimatization are important, and in the rare case of stronger symptoms, support and adjustments are always available to ensure your comfort and safety.

Is Chile a safe country to travel to?

Chile is considered one of the safest and most stable countries in South America, with modern infrastructure and a strong tourism industry. Destinations such as Santiago, the Andes ski region, the wine valleys, Valparaíso, and Easter Island are well-developed and regularly visited by international travelers. As with any destination, standard travel awareness is recommended, but overall Chile offers a safe, comfortable, and well-supported experience throughout the country.

What is included in the heli-ski expedition?

All expeditions include premium accommodation, fully guided helicopter skiing, safety equipment, and private transfers, complemented by elevated dining experiences featuring curated menus and sommelier-selected wine and beverage pairings, including premium wines and spirits.

What is not included in the expedition?

Flights to and from Chile, personal equipment, travel insurance, and discretionary gratuities, should you wish to offer them, are not included.

What equipment is required?

Guests should bring their own ski or snowboard equipment. Safety equipment (avalanche beacon, shovel, probe) is provided. For added convenience, we can arrange transport of your equipment. A detailed packing list will be shared prior to arrival.

How is the quality in Chile?

Chile offers a high standard of quality across transportation, infrastructure, guiding, and overall service. Chile is modern, well-organized, and highly experienced in hosting international travelers. Combined with world-class terrain, reliable conditions, and access to exceptional food and wine, the overall experience is both professional and uniquely authentic.

How many guests are in each group?

Each helicopter accommodates up to 4 guests alongside a professional guide, ensuring a highly personalized experience. A professional photographer and videographer is often included to capture the experience, and can be arranged based on the group and conditions.

Do I need to speak Spanish?

No. All guest-facing aspects of the expedition are conducted in English. Our team is fully accustomed to working with international guests, and all guides and staff are bilingual, ensuring clear communication at all times.

What if I do not have a passport?

A valid passport is required to travel to Chile. If you do not currently have one, we recommend applying as early as possible. Expedited services are available through the U.S. Department of State and private agencies, which can significantly reduce processing times if needed. Our team is happy to assist with planning and timing.

What level of skier is required?

Our expeditions are designed for a range of skiers, from confident intermediate to advanced and expert levels. Terrain selection is tailored by our professional guides to match each group’s ability, ensuring a safe, enjoyable, and progressive experience for all participants.

Do I need prior heli-ski or backcountry experience?

No prior heli-skiing or backcountry experience is required. Strong intermediate to advanced skiers are well suited, as guides thoughtfully select terrain and set a comfortable, steady pace throughout the day. The experience is structured to feel approachable from the outset, with options to progress at your own pace.

What should I do to prepare physically before the trip?

A moderate level of general fitness will help you enjoy the experience, but no special training is required. Most guests arrive with a typical level of activity and do just fine. The days are paced thoughtfully, allowing you to ski comfortably and enjoy each run without feeling rushed.

What is the group pace like?

Groups are formed based on ability and skiing pace to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all guests.

What if I feel I am not good enough for the group I am placed with?

For intermediate skiers, terrain is carefully selected to be approachable, with smooth, consistent snow that feels more forgiving and easier to ski than typical resort conditions. Guides set the pace and choose lines throughout the day, ensuring you are always within your comfort zone. The experience is designed so every guest feels calm, confident, and fully supported from the very start.

What if I am placed with a group that is not good enough for me?

For more experienced guests, terrain and line selection are adjusted throughout the day to maintain a dynamic and engaging experience. Guides set the pace and prioritize access to more challenging terrain, ensuring stronger skiers can fully enjoy the scope of the mountains.

What safety measures are in place?

Safety is our highest priority. All expeditions are led by certified guides with extensive local experience. Guests are equipped with avalanche safety gear (beacon, shovel, probe) and receive a safety briefing prior to each day. Flights are operated by highly experienced pilots using high-altitude capable helicopters under strict regulatory standards, with operators trusted for professional and government aviation work.

Is heli-skiing safe?

Heli-skiing is operated with a strong focus on control and thoughtful decision-making from the moment you arrive. Guides manage terrain, pace, and decisions throughout the day, continuously adapting to conditions. The overall approach is conservative and considered, creating an experience that feels calm, controlled, and fully guided.

What if I get injured during the expedition?

Guest safety is our highest priority. In the event of an injury, our guides are trained in mountain first response and will respond immediately. Helicopter support enables rapid evacuation when required, with access to medical facilities in Santiago typically within 15–25 minutes of flight time. Our team coordinates all logistics to ensure efficient and professional care throughout.

What type of terrain can I expect?

Terrain varies from wide-open alpine slopes to more technical descents, selected based on conditions and group ability.

How many runs per day?

Most days include approximately 6–10 runs, depending on conditions and group pace, with each run carefully selected to maximize quality over quantity.

How many vertical feet can I expect per day?

Typical skiing days deliver approximately 15,000–25,000 vertical feet per skier, depending on conditions.

What happens if I do not use all my vertical?

While we aim to maximize skiing each day, unused vertical is not refundable, as operations are dependent on weather and conditions. Our priority is always safety and delivering the best possible experience.

Will I be skiing every day?

Weather can vary, and while we aim to ski as much as possible, flexibility is part of the experience. In the Andes, weather systems typically move through quickly, with storm cycles often lasting one to two days before clearing into sunny conditions. When flying is not possible, curated alternative activities are arranged to ensure your time remains exceptional.

What happens if weather conditions prevent flying?

If weather conditions prevent flying, we will first attempt to reschedule heli-skiing for another suitable day and arrange resort skiing in the meantime. If rescheduling is not possible, we will provide a range of curated alternative experiences so your time remains well spent and enjoyable.

What happens if conditions are not suitable for the expedition?

In the rare event that snow conditions do not meet operational standards, your expedition may be deferred to the following season. Our team will work closely with you to reschedule, ensuring the experience meets the level of quality expected.

Where does the trip start?

Expeditions begin upon arrival at Santiago Airport (SCL). Full travel details and private transfer arrangements are provided upon booking.

Do I need travel insurance?

Comprehensive travel and medical insurance, including coverage for heli-skiing, is required.

When is the best time to book for optimal conditions?

Our expeditions run from late July through early September, when conditions are typically at their best. Booking early is recommended, as availability is limited and the best expeditions tend to fill quickly.

How do I reserve a spot?

Reservations are confirmed on a first-come basis. A deposit is required to secure your place.

Can my place be transferred to another guest?

Yes. Should you be unable to attend, your place may be transferred to another guest within the same season, subject to prior approval. This provides flexibility while preserving the curated nature of each expedition.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations are subject to our booking terms. Details will be provided during the reservation process.

Are private groups available?

Private charters can be arranged for groups seeking a fully customized experience.

Can non-skiing partners join?

Yes. Parallel expeditions can be arranged across Chile, including wine and cultural programs.
